Before Covid, which seems like so long ago, it was a fun day trip to cross the border and do some shopping. I always loved to go to Target and see what different snacks and games they had for the kids that we could not get here in Canada.
On this particular trip, my friend Patricia and I drove down to the Walden Galleria to get some Christmas shopping done.
We were in a candle/gift type store looking around. I didn’t think that I was going to find a lot that I wanted in the store so I didn’t bother grabbing a basket or a cart.
The first thing I noticed when I went in was a bag of pancake mix called ROBERT’S PANCAKE MIX. Now that was a perfect gift for Rob since he was the breakfast chef in our house!
I had some shopping bags hung over my left arm t the elbow and needed my right hand free to browse so I tucked the pancake mix under my arm.
We continued to shop and look through the store for a few more minutes. I managed to find a couple of stocking stuffers that I took to the cashier and purchased. I added the bag to the crook of my arm and walked out of the store to continue down the mall.
We got several stores down when I realized …
OH MY GOD!
I STILL HAD THE PANCAKE MIX UNDER MY ARM!
I was shocked that : 1) I had forgotten about it while I paid for my other purchases, 2) no alarms went off when I left the store and 3) it took me so long to realize it!
Patricia just shook her head and gave me an eye roll.
Funny. I don’t think she was surprised at all.
Now comes the Scruples part of the evening – like a real life version of the board game.
Do I take it back to the store and pay or throw it in a bag and continue on?
Think about your answer for a second.

Well, because I am a good, honest person, (and scared shitless to cross the border even when I have not stolen anything), we returned to the store, explained our situation and paid for Robert’s Pancake Mix.
The cashier seemed shocked that we returned it.
In the end, karma really was not on our side because we ended up getting questioned at the border anyway! Our good deed did not help us out!
Lesson learned? Thelma and Louise we are NOT!
