I was sitting out in the back yard on the weekend and noticed a few bees. They were annoying but I didn’t really think anything of it.
In the back yard, we have stairs that take you out to the front of the house.
I was cutting the grass at the top of the hill and noticed a hole in the ground. As I ran over it with the lawnmower, I realized it was a bee home (or whatever they are called when they are built in the ground).
There were a couple of bees/hornets/wasps around the hole but I wasn’t really worried about it. I thought that they would eventually go away. And I put up the lovely baby gate so that the puppy did not get up the stairs and put his face down the hole. Earlier in the spring, he already came into contact with “something” and had his first Benadryl experience.

We can get into the back yard via the other side of the house so that could be our Plan B.
HOWEVER, today I was in the back yard and there are considerably more bees in the actual yard. Yikes. I was cleaning up the yard and actually got stung under my arm. OUCH.
I went back up to the top of the hill and, much to my surprise, there were a LOT more bees than the day before!
It is hard to say how many there are but I am going to guess that at any one time there are 20 or 30 flying around the hole!
I looked online and did everything that was suggested to get rid of bees that live in the ground :
- sprinkle (pour!!) cinnamon in the hole
- vinegar and water in a spray bottle
- boiling water and dish detergent
- cover the hole with dirt
Done it all, over the course of a couple of days, but always unsuccessfully.
I have now posted online to get some exterminator recommendations as it is starting to freak me now!
Now they smell like pumpkin pie, they have had a bath, have vinegar in their eyes and are dirty from having to dig their soapy way out!
Now they are PISSED!
Lesson (in the process of being) learned: Leave extermination issues to the professionals.
* I am pretty sure I am lucky to have only been stung once!
